SEAMS IN REALITY is the first book in the Seams in Reality Series.
As a freshman in a suburban college near Chicago, Andrew leads an ordinary life until he meets Tonya, a strange woman with an even stranger secret. She is a master sorcerer, and he becomes one of her apprentices. Tonya’s other apprentice is a resourceful young woman named Charley, and they aren’t the only sorcerers in the world. The United States government has an entire bureau responsible for controlling them and the special seams which enable magic.
Andrew’s new life takes a dangerous turn when he meets Blake, a sorcerer who knew his grandfather. Blake’s thirst for power leaves a trail of casualties, and in the end, only Andrew can stop him.
Seams in Reality is the first book of a new YA book about sorcerers-in-training, but with a twist. In this world, sorcerers need to draw on the power of “seams” to utiilize their natural abilities. The seams are owned and protected by sorcerers, who are registered with, and in some cases working with a federal agency, the Bureau of Physical Investigation.
The series revolves around Andrew and Charley, who are apprenticed to master sorcerer Tonya. There is romance blooming, action, mystery, and danger –all the while trying to live a relatively normal college life.
I was instantly swept into this world and the characters that inhabit it. The majority of the characters are well drawn and fully developed. The agents of the BPI were the least 3 dimensional– with the exception of Dan, Charley and Andrew’s liaison. I hope the author develops his character a bit more.
The story is told from mostly Andrew’s POV and the author does a great job at making the reader feel what Andrew is feeling — his confusion, his temptations, and his desires.
There are many twists and turns as Andrew and Charley learn more about their powers and how to use them–and the surprising powers and talents they possess as they get caught up in a criminal investigation.
I’m really looking forward to the next book in the series, because this one ends on something of a cliffhanger.
