As an environmental artist, I’ve had incredible experiences working at, and with, sites and their energies and stored memories. When I’m at a site I work in a world of wonder, where I communicate with the Spirit world, the Earth, Animals, Insects and Plants to bring forward messages. These messages have been relayed through gallery exhibitions that connect viewers back to Nature, as well as works left at sites for viewers to discover, to large-scale public art projects. I was called upon to expand the way that I work with Spirit and the Earth to reach a wider audience, especially youth. Not everyone visits an art gallery or museum. In writing Hunters of the Dream I want to invite readers, through story, into a world of wonder where they can begin to access their own innate memories of ancient mysteries and our deep connections to all beings, both seen and unseen.
Some of the chapters in the book are based on experiences I’ve had working with Spirit. The earliest of these was over twenty years ago when I was at ‘home’ in Northern Ontario for a visit. On the first night at camp I had a spontaneous vision quest–a visitation from Earth Mother*. At the time of her visit I was a graphic designer, an art director, and loving it. I thought I was going mad when I woke up from her visit remembering the messages she shared with me. It took me a long, long, time and a lot of historical research before I finally believed her. She also told me that when the time I was right–and I would know when that was– I would be sharing her story to encourage others to search for their own truth and to reconnect with Spirit, the Earth and all of Nature.
I began working on the Eco Heart Oracle Deck, which guides the characters in Hunters of the Dream, over ten years ago. It started with dreams and writing notes and sketches in my journal, but I didn’t sit down to create the Oracle until last year. I knew that the Oracle would play a key role in Hunters of the Dream. Each of the 48 cards included a deep meditation to retrieve the messages and meanings for each of the cards–the meanings are included in the guidebook. Some of these meditations and their messages have become chapters in Hunters of the Dream. Users of the Eco Heart Oracle do not need to be readers of Hunters of the Dream to access their messages.
I hope that readers will be curious about the Teachings that Nana Brin gives Aurora. The Teachings are necessary for Aurora to survive her calling as the Huntress, and leader of, the Hunters of the Dream. These Teachings call upon our innate ability to move through the world using our deep intuition as our guidance system.
* Earth Mother also visits Aurora, our heroine in Hunters of the Dream – no, I’m not Aurora and she’s not based on me.
When the summer holidays begin, Aurora thinks she’s just a normal teenager about to have another boring summer. Then, for her seventeenth birthday, Nana Brin gives her a long-silent Oracle that has been passed down through their family for generations. The mysterious Oracle soon awakens in response to the creeping Darkness that is escaping and destroying all worlds. Aurora must quickly find the courage to come to terms with her calling as the Huntress of the Dream.
Check out this excerpt:
The cards rustled, shifting in their dusty threadbare bag. They had lain dormant, forgotten, for generations. The Oracle woke slowly, like a hound sniffing the wind, trying to catch the scent of what had disturbed it, before calling forth a warning. The Oracle bristled. Attuned to the subtle vibrations of the Worlds it sensed a shifting in the balance of energy. The Darkness was once again pulsing, sending out tendrils of elusive gloom. It too had lain waiting, patiently. Over time it had slowly gained power, recruiting those it could ensnare with its black promises. It could not yet escape from the confines of the agreement reached during the Great Darkness…but soon the winds would shift and change. Fully awake, the Oracle began to cast out its own response, filaments of white light unfurling, in a quest to find the Huntress before the Darkness did.
